Level 3 and 4 definitions

This week we have more on the difference between level 3 and level 4 in the theory assignments. This is a more detailed version of the section from each essay page which is also linked. Thought it might be helpful to have it all collected together on one page.

T1- Roles, responsibilities and boundaries (link to whole essay discussion)

Level 3 word count: 300-500
Level 4 word count: 500-700

The level difference is between “describe” in level 3 and “review” in level 4.

describe: give a detailed account in words of

review: survey or evaluate (a subject or past events)

If you’re aiming at the level 4 that means not necessarily getting more in depth but maintaining perspective and asking a bit more of the “why” rather than the “what”.

T2 – Key aspects of current legislative requirements (link to whole essay discussion)

Level 3 word count: 150-250
Level 4 word count: 250-350

identify: establish or indicate who or what (someone or something) is

summarise: give a brief statement of the main points of (something)

For level 3 you could get away with just a list of the legislation and relevant codes of practice if all you have to do is identify them. To summarise within this word limit is tricky but you get a precious extra 100 words for level 4. A sentence or two on each piece relating them back to teaching / your subject should do the trick.

T3 – Inclusion, equality and diversity (link to whole essay discussion)

Level 3 word count: 200-300
Level 4 word count: 300-400

explain: make (an idea or situation) clear to someone by describing it in more detail or revealing relevant facts

discuss: talk or write about (a topic) in detail, taking into account different issues or ideas

The two questions are constructed differently, it’s not just a case of switching terms between the two. In level 3 inclusion, equality and diversity are presented as equals and they just require an explanation. You have to “identify” other points of referral in the second part of the question. However in level 4 equality and diversity are split off from inclusion and you have to “discuss issues”. Relate them back to your potential learners and talk about the effects of these issues. Promoting inclusion is a separate issue which shows the need to focus a little more on that. And then you have to review other points of referral and show you understand what might be needed when.

T4 – Establish ground rules for appropriate behaviour (link to whole essay discussion)

Level 3 word count: 150-250
Level 4 word count: 250-350

The difference here is the two words below and the addition of “different” in to level 4. So it’s about a variety of methods for different situations and you should relate that back to your own subject, learning environment and learners (or future learners).

After that it all hinges on the difference between “explain” and “analyse”. Taking it right back to its root with a dictionary definition…

explain: make (an idea or situation) clear to someone by describing it in more detail or revealing relevant facts

analyse: examine (something) methodically and in detail, typically in order to explain and interpret it

interpret: explain the meaning of (information or actions)

T5 – Embed elements of functional skills (link to whole essay discussion)

Level 3 word count: 200-300
Level 4 word count: 300-400

explain: make (an idea or situation) clear to someone by describing it in more detail or revealing relevant facts

evaluate: form an idea of the amount, number, or value of; assess

You might as well push for level 4 if only to get the extra word count. It’s that fundamental difference again between “explain” and “evaluate a range”. Level 4 is looking for something broader and more analytical, showing you have thought round this and considered multiple options, weighing them up against each other. And there are many multiples of options.

T6 – Need for keeping records and types of records (link to whole essay discussion)

Level 3 word count: 200-400
Level 4 word count: 400-600

Just one key word difference between “explain” in level 3 and “justify” in level 4. And their difference in dictionary terms…

explain: make (an idea or situation) clear to someone by describing it in more detail or revealing relevant facts

justify: show or prove to be right or reasonable

That’s a big difference but justification is important and legally necessary when keeping records about people. That’s why there are two parts to the question and they come in the order they do. If you can tie they why in with the what you will be justifying and hitting that level 4.

T7 – Different assessment methods available (link to whole essay discussion)

Level 3 word count: 300-500
Level 4 word count: 400-600

This assignment probably has the biggest difference between level 3 and 4. There’s the usual swapping of words but also a whole separate section about the different contexts, which is covered above rather than here. If nothing else you’ll want the word count: the top end of level 4 is double the low limit of level three!

Some of the key definitions:

state: express something definitely or clearly in speech or writing

review: assess (something) formally with the intention of instituting change if necessary: survey or evaluate (a subject or past events)

evaluate: form an idea of the amount, number, or value of; assess

Hope that helps, I know the whole level difference thing is a hard one to get straightened out.
