The reading list was originally put together in 2011 and since then there have been an amazing number of new books and updated editions. So the list has had an overhaul and is now all updated to the new Award with the newest editions.
So here’s a little reading list post with a few Ptlls books and a bit more detail below about two classics in particular.
Ptlls reading list:
- The Award in Education and Training – updated from Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector: The New Award
by Ann Gravells plus a Kindle edition
- Teaching Today A Practical Guide Fifth Edition
by Geoff Petty
- Achieving Your Award in Education and Training
by Mary Francis and Jim Gould
- Planning and Enabling Learning in the Lifelong Learning Sector
by Ann Gravells and Susan Simpson also for Kindle
- Teaching, Tutoring and Training in the Lifelong Learning Sector (Achieving QTLS Series)
by Susan Wallace also for Kindle
- Teaching and Training in Lifelong Learning by Armitage
- Equality and Diversity in the Lifelong Learning Sector by Ann Gravells and Susan Simpson
- Practical Teaching: a Guide to Teaching in the Education and Training Sector by Linda Wilson
- Making Learning Happen: a Guide for Post Compulsory Education by Phil Race
- Passing Assessments for the Award in Education and Training by Ann Gravells also for Kindle
Chief among these is Ann Gravells with The Award in Education and Training – which was updated from Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector: The New Award and also has a Kindle edition
.
For all courses this is going to be mandatory reading. Your college library should have copies if it is but don’t rely on your public library to stock it, mine doesn’t. It is a lovely slim volume, 120 pages. The table of contents shown on Amazon doesn’t do it justice. There’s a lot to be said for it being aimed specifically at the Award/Ptlls and also at people new to the world of teaching. It has a list of abbreviations in the back for example.
Also likely to be mandatory reading is Teaching Today A Practical Guide Fifth Edition by Geoff Petty. This is a heftier tome but an invaluable resource that covers not only the Award/Ptlls but compulsory education as well. All I would say on this one is watch the edition: if you’ve got the most up to date on but your tutor has an older one they’ve had for a while you may have page number issues. Because it is a bit more expensive you could probably trawl the charity bookshops.
Leave a comment if there are any others you have been recommended or know of. There’s also a list of books for creativity and inspiration that you might like. The links to all these books are through Amazon and are affiliate links which means that by buying through them you are supporting the site. If you don’t want to then don’t follow the link, just google the title. But if you do: thank you.
Thank you for recommending my text book – Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. The 4th edition is now available. I came across your website by accident and I feel it will certainly be useful for anyone taking PTLLS. I also have lots of information and resources available on my website http://www.anngravells.co.uk
Good luck to everyone taking PTLLS!
Good work Ann ! Have just started the PTLLS course, and my partner was able to get Ed 4 from the uni library. The right amount of detail, without excessive stuffing. Very helpful. Just for your info, the epub and Kindle ISBNs are listed in the front, but are not yet available. I would have bought it for my Kindle. Maybe I am too quick off the mark
Thanks Ray – the Kindle version is only currenlty available in edition 3 but I will chase up the author to see what’s happening with edition 4. I’m pleased you like the book.
Apologies – last post should have said I will chase up the ‘publisher’ not the ‘author’!! I am always chasing myself up!!!
Thanks for the update Ann!
I am doing edexcel btec and are advised not to use any c&g publications the btec ptlls is slightly to that of c&g. Any advice?
John I had no idea there was an Edexcel version of the course. Need to do some research!
Update on the Kindle version of my text book. Edition 4 is available on Amazon at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Preparing-Teach-Lifelong-Learning-Sector/dp/B004ZJONC8/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&qid=1305742799&sr=8-22
Happy reading!
Ann
Update on books – PTLLS Edition 5 will be out in January for the new ‘four unit’ PTLLS.
It will be followed later by Passing PTLLS Assessments, and Study Skills for PTLLS.
All books are aimed at the revised PTLLS.
I have a question for Ann, I am booked on a level 3 course next week(funded by the job centre to assist me in finding a job – I have 15 years recruitment/ 5 years retail management experience. In both of these roles I have had occassion to train others but have no formal qualification – this level 3 course comprises 4 days classroom and then 2 weeks of home study to submit a portfolio for assessment (at least that is my understanding of it) does that seem sufficient to gain the understanding and skill required to qualify at this level. I have little or no knowledge of the course work or what is expected – it seems a little back to front that at somepoint in the four day course I will be asked to micro teach a session for 30 mins and then presumably do research and study after the classroom sessions to compile my portfolio. Any advice would be greatly appreciated – (Im off to Watersones right now to buy your book.)
I now have reading lists for PTLLS, CTLLS and DTLLS on my website with pictures of the books.
There is also information on there about the new PTLLS and TAQA.
Hi Tim – the course you describe should be sufficient to help you achieve at level 3. The PTLLS Award is just an introduction to teaching giving you the basics to survive with learners. I’m pleased you are buying my book, there are two versions at the moment as the PTLLS standards have recently been updated. You need to ask if you are taking the 6 QCF credit or 12 QCF credit course as the latter will involve more work. There is info on my website http://www.anngravells.co.uk
Good luck!
Ann
Hi all,
Interested in this course, has anyone done the course as an e-learner?
I have been loaned two books Preparing to Teach by Ann Gravells but third edition and Teaching Today by Geoff Petty again third edition. Does anyone know if this will be enough information to achieve a PTLLS certication.
